An excursion to Chichen Itza can be hot and exhausting (nevertheless it is certainly worth the trip). For a cooling respite, spend some time at Cenote Ik Kil, the Sacred Blue Cenote, off Highway 180. The entrance driveway is directly across the road from the Dolores Alba Hotel, less than 2 miles from Chichen Itza. The entrance fee is 70 pesos.
This site has been beautifully developed with winding landscaped roads interspersed with palapa roofed bungalows which can be rented for the night.
To the right below is one of the casitas under construction (in 2006). As we walked up the driveway from our own modest accommodations at Hotel Dolores Alba, we saw a waiter delivering a breakfast tray to one of the bungalows - such luxury, breakfast in bed!
The cenote truly is blue, and the swimming surface is about 80 feet below ground level with vines and waterfalls cascading down the walls. To get to the swimming and diving level, you climb down a corkscrew staircase carved into the limestone.
The water is cool and clear, perfectly refreshing. On the property there are showers, a small store and a buffet restaurant.
